Useful Tips

Pin It I've been getting quite a few emails lately with questions regarding a few things I've blogged about in the past, so I thought I'd answer them all in one post...

If you have a question you'd like to me to address in a Q&A post, email me! utahdealdiva at gmail dot com.

Frugal Recipe: Pumpkin Apple Butter

Pin It I've almost made it to the last of my free apples! A reader suggested I make crock pot apple butter, so I searched for a yummy looking recipe and found a few. I liked this one here and here. Each had elements I liked, but wasn't quite what I was looking for, so I came up with my own.

I admit- some of my creations are more edible than others! Over the years though, I have to say I've gotten pretty good at creating my own recipes. {I think my husband would agree!} This one was a home run. Pumpkin Apple Butter. I literally wanted to sit and eat it with a spoon! I refrained however and instead, toasted some zucchini bread and was in heaven. Cooking it long and slow made the flavors meld and the consistency really is just like butter. It's incredible!

Pumpkin Apple Butter

5.5 lbs apples {I used about 22 small apples}
1 fifteen oz can pumpkin puree
3 cups brown sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt

Peel and slice apples. Go here to read tips on how to do this faster. Mix remaining ingredients and pour in crock pot, over apples. Stir to blend. Cook on medium 8-10 hours, stirring every 3 hours or so. Turn heat to low and cook an additional 4-5 hours. Yes, it takes all day long!

Turn it off and remove the lid, so it cools. After it's sufficiently cool, blend in a food processor or blender until smooth.

Enjoy over toast, on crepes, waffles, pancakes, or whatever you'd like!

I have some in a jar for now and froze the rest for later. We'll see how long it lasts!

Coupon Preview, 10/18

Pin It Quick personal note: Sorry I haven't been blogging as much these past few days. I've been sick with a cold and now most of my family has it! I feel like I'm finally feeling better, but am still trying to get my family on that same course. Hopefully by Monday I'll be back into my normal blogging mode!

Friday is Mega Swag Bucks day!

Pin It Don't forget- today is MEGA SWAG BUCKS DAY!! Your chances of earning 3-100 Swagbucks in one search drastically increases on Fridays! I make an extra effort to do a bit of searching on Fridays and it always pays off.

If you're still wondering what all the hype is over these Swag Bucks, I encourage you to look into it. It's just another way I use to earn a little extra cash (in the form of gift cards in this instance) for the holidays. If you simply search the internet like you always do, you will most likely win at least 1-2 a day. The more you use the Swag Bucks search engine, the more you win. I found it took me a good 2 weeks of using it often to start really winning Swag Bucks. Those first 2 weeks I think I won maybe 3 total! So if you keep at it, it really pays off. Go here for more info!

Another $3 off Kroger {Smith's} Comfort's Diapers & more

Pin It Go here to print a coupon for $3/1 package of Kroger Comforts diapers. This coupon can only be printed once per computer. Thanks MoneySavingMom!

The last time this coupon was available, I got a package at Smith's for less than $3. I am usually a Huggies or Pampers mom {simply because I can usually get them so cheap using a coupon!} but I had a good experience with the Comfort's diapers. I don't love them, but for less than $3, I'll buy them again.
Speaking of diapers, here are a couple offers that are still available:
Free sample of Huggies Pure & Natural here. This sample also comes with a $3 off coupon!

Thrifty Thursday: Saving Money on Heating Expenses

Pin It Even though it's gorgeous outside today, it will be snowing before we know it, so I thought for this week's Thrifty Thursday feature, I'd give some tips on how to save money on your heating expenses. Most of these are very simple things you can do in 5 minutes or less that end up having a big impact on your

  • Change the air filters in your home for adequate air flow when the heater is on.

  • Change the direction to counter-clockwise on your ceiling fans so they'll push the cold air up and the warm air down. Your heater won't have to work as hard and as a result, you'll save money! Thanks Tamara!

  • After you use the oven, leave the door open. Make use of that heat that would otherwise be wasted. Obviously make sure the oven is turned off and kids are safely kept away if you do this!

  • Open the blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the house when the sun is shining and close them as soon as the sun goes down to retain the solar heat. Close curtains on the shady side of the house. Also consider insulated curtains or adding a thermal lining to your existing curtains. I put some up in my kid's rooms and it's helped significantly! {Also an added bonus, it makes the room dark for better naps!}

  • If your water heater is in an unheated space like an unfinished basement, wrap an insulation blanket around it to prevent heat loss. Also make sure your water heater is set to only 120 degrees. Anything higher is just unnecessary!

  • Don't heat areas of your house you don't use regularly. Close heating vents or turn back thermostats in those areas and close the doors for a painless reduction in heating costs. Also, if you're like us and have only 1 thermostat in a 2-story home, close some of the upstairs vents to direct the heated air to the downstairs, making the temperature of your home more uniform.

  • Use a programmable thermostat and be mindful of what you're setting it at. 68 to 70 degrees while you're home and awake, and 60 to 65 degrees while you're asleep or not at home are reasonable temperatures. Setting it too low at night isn't a good idea because it will make your furnace work overtime to compensate when it kicks on. Also, if 68-70 degrees sounds too low for you, I encourage you to try it for a week or two. There's nothing wrong with wearing a sweater at home and it's amazing how quickly you acclimate to the lower temps.

Do you have an idea regarding saving money on heating costs? Please share!

Save those Milk Jugs for Halloween Crafts!

Pin It I have to admit, our Halloween decorations have been up since early September. My kids love Halloween!

We go through a lot of milk, so when a holiday is approaching, I start saving the jugs and scouring the internet for some fun crafts. Here are a few I've found for Halloween:

Here's a fun idea that uses a few milk jugs! We saw this Pirate at Thanksgiving Point last weekend. You could just leave the skeleton free of any costume and it would still be fun to display on the porch! Here are the instructions.

These are so fun! They would be so cute lining a walk-way. Easy to make as well- go here
to learn how.
Ok, so I know this isn't a milk jug per se (it's a Tide bottle!), but it's still so cute! Plus, I thought you could use the same idea and make a ghost one from a milk jug! Go here for details on making this little guy.

Want even more ideas? Family Fun magazine has a fantastic collection of crafts for young children. You can also go here to see a collection of 20 crafts for older kids from Women's Day magazine.

Grocery Shopping this Week, 10/14

Pin It Go here to see the full Grocery Smarts list for Smith's. They're having a decent sale this week. You can get 8-oz blocks or bags of shredded cheese for only .74 each.

Their Mega Event promo is identical to last week's. Go here to see a possible scenario for that.

Albertson's is having a better sale than our ad reflected. However, I'm already hearing stories of incredibly empty shelves, so take a look at the Grocery Smarts list here and then decide if it's worth it to you! {My take: it's not!}

Go here to see the full Grocery Smarts list for Associated Foods stores.
Remember that you can get Kraft Natural cheese this week for only .49! I hear they're being pretty strict about the 2-bag limit, so if you have more than 1 set of the vendor & manufacturer's coupons, you might want to make 2 trips this week!

What are your plans for shopping this week? I think I'll stop by Dick's for the Kraft cheese, other than that, I think I'm done. I did price match at Walmart Monday morning and got the Ronzoni pasta and milk, so I did do a little shopping already this week!

Giveaway: Mary Kay On-the-Go Gift Basket!

I have a fantastic Giveaway for you all this week!

My neighbor recently introduced me to Christy Flater, a local Mary Kay consultant. She's a mom with a passion for skin care for both herself and other women- like us! Within minutes of meeting Christy she had me pegged as a minimalist. Is it that obvious?! Okay, so it is. Nevertheless, even a minimalist like me can see the value in Mary Kay products!

Christy has generously agreed to giveaway a few hot prizes to three amazing Utah Deal Diva readers!

The GRAND PRIZE Winner will receive a
5-piece Mary Kay On-the-Go gift basket with a $79 retail value.

It contains:

Mary Kay® Facial Cleansing Cloths, pack of 30: Revive your skin anywhere, anytime. Mary Kay® Facial Cleansing Cloths cleanse, exfoliate and tone in one easy step. You’ll love how the exclusive, botanical-enriched formula gently removes dirt, oil and makeup, leaving your skin feeling clean and soft.

Mary Kay® TimeWise® Age-Fighting Moisturizer:
Reduce the appearance of fine lines for younger-looking skin with this oil-free lotion. The patented complex helps accelerate skin's renewal process – hydrates, smoothes, firms and softens.

Mary Kay® Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover: Gently removes eye makeup, including waterproof mascara, without tugging or pulling the delicate skin in the eye area. Formula does not leave skin feeling dry.

Mary Kay® Ultimate Mascara: Extremely volumizing, super-thickening, exclusive formula creates the look of big, bold, separated lashes that last all day.

Mary Kay® NouriShine® Lip Gloss: NEW! Fancy Nancy or Bronze Bliss
Formulated with enriching vitamins A and E, Mary Kay® NouriShine® Lip Gloss smoothes, soothes and softens lips, helping restore a youthful appearance while antioxidants fight against wrinkle-causing free radicals.

Two other winners will each get receive a
Mary Kay® NouriShine® Lip Gloss!

Christy gave me several products and samples to try out and I have to say, my favorite is the new lip gloss. It comes in two shades, Fancy Nancy (sheer pink) or Bronze Bliss and I love both! Bronze Bliss is a perfect shade for Fall, so I've been wearing that often. I put it on and no longer look like the tired mom whose been home cleaning up messes and cooking all day! It's a must-have in my opinion. Go here to see what each color looks like.
The mascara is awesome. Even though it's not water-proof, it is very durable and I like that. The moisturizer is a must-have for dry gals like me. It doesn't feel heavy at all but certainly does the job at moisturizing my very dry skin, especially amid the changing weather.
I liked the cleansing cloths and eye make-up remover, but since they're both products I don't regularly use, it's going to take the most effort to stick with them. Frugal tip: Cut the cleansing cloths in half so they last twice as long!

The End is Near...for Albertson's that is!

So, what do you all think of the Albertson's "ad" this week? Or should I call it the Albertson's Memo? The little one-page thing we got in the mail today. Yeah, that was it.

I especially like the red line of text at the bottom, "SOME ITEMS NOT AVAILABLE IN ALL STORES." Translation: Stop asking us when we're going to stock the shelves. We're not.

The dates have changed several times, but I think it's sufficient to say that before the end of this month, most of the Albertson's stores in Utah will no longer be Albertson's. Go here to read more on that. Like many of you, I'm ready. While there have been some decent Albertson's sales as of late, there has been more drama than I think is necessary when it comes to grocery shopping.
There were some great deals I tried to take advantage of this week. After going to Albertson's 3 times, and each time being met with completely empty shelves, I finally gave up and price matched at Walmart.

I'll keep you posted on anything I hear about the new store! {In the mean time, I might just skip shopping this week!}

This code seems to be working for any items on the site as long as your total exceeds $20. I looked around but had a hard time finding many inexpensive items. I'm excited though- this bedding is super cute and for an 8-piece set, it's a great deal!

Thanks PinchingYourPennies for this great find!

Another $1/1 Muir Glen Products

Pin It Go here to print off a new $1/1 Muir Glen product coupon. Walmart used to carry these for $1.16, however, I, like many others have suddenly been unable to find them there.

Has anyone checked Target? Smith's? I'm sure we can turn this $1 coupon into a great deal...

I have to say, their bathing suits are among my favorites! I got one a couple months ago during a different sale and LOVE it. It's loooong, but still fitted. Flattering but modest! Note: I got a swim skirt and was a bit surprised to find it doesn't come with a bathing suit bottom- it's JUST the skirt!
