Grocery Store Review: Winco

Since the grand opening sale nearly 3 months ago, I've made it a point to shop at Winco regularly, in an attempt to get to know the store and form an opinion of it.

Which I have.

In short, I really, really like it.

Winco is a little different than other stores we have around here. For one, you bag your own groceries. You also can't use credit cards. And quite possibly the biggest difference I see, the minute you shop at Winco, you suddenly wish there was one right around the corner from your house, because you don't want to shop anywhere else. Is it just me? Probably not because most people I talk to who have shopped at Winco love it.

Being brand new, our stores are clean and well lit. You walk in and are immediately greeted with great deals. This past week it was pork roasts for .98 per pound. The infamous "wall of savings" is next, although I've never been super impressed with the items featured there. They're supposedly the best deals in the store, but I disagree. From what I've seen, the wall of savings features junk food for essentially the same price at Walmart.

However, if you keep walking, you'll soon see one of the main reasons I have enjoyed shopping at Winco: the produce section. First of all, it's huge. I have spent a lot of time looking at each and every item and am just incredibly impressed with the selection. Last time I was there I think I counted 8 different types of carrots for purchase- from shredded, julienne sliced, individually sold, and even in a 40-lb bag. Second, the prices are amazing. Pears for .78/lb, .18/lb oranges that were available around the holidays, and for weeks, avocados have been only .33 each.

If you can make it out of the produce section will room still in your cart, you'll enter the bulk food section. Wow. I can't say I've ever seen a bulk foods section quite as extensive! You can purchase the normal candy items, but the real gems are the bins after the candy- bulk bins of nuts, flours and grains of all different kids, and my personal favorites- spices. The prices are so incredible they deserve a post of their own...which I'm already working on! Suffice it to say- if you haven't checked out the bulk food section yet, I highly recommend it!

The dairy and meat sections of Winco are decent, milk and eggs being somewhat of an exception. Each time I've gone, the milk and egg prices have been at least .10 lower than our Walmart's. The meat prices are good- sometimes even great- but nothing I haven't seen at Walmart or Smith's. Not only that, but the meat didn't look very appealing.

Keep an eye out for these little green tags that indicate a sale item. Sales generally run for about a month, and so far I can't seem to pinpoint an exact schedule. So far the sales have been pretty impressive, especially on cereal. By combining coupons with sales, I've managed to get some of our favorite cereals for around .50-.80 per box.

Walking around the store many times now, I've concluded that their selection is inconsistent. You sometimes have a wide variety of options...and other times, only one option. They don't have a wide selection of diapers, yet the rest of the baby section was decent. Same with canned foods, frozen foods and even cleaning products. With many items, it was either all or nothing, and after a while, it started to frustrate me. I had hoped to find the infamous Electrasol dish washing detergent to be a screaming deal with my $2.50 off coupon. However, they had 1 variety and it was a 32-count box for $7.46 {buying it at Costco would be cheaper!}

Despite the inconsistent selection, I still really like Winco. Their prices are just incredible and for the most part, I've found what I've been looking for. To give you an idea on just how low their prices are, I pulled up the Grocery Comparison post from a few months ago and input Winco's prices for those items. Those who have been reading my blog for a while know that Smith's beat out Walmart and Target and earned the title of being lowest priced grocery store in Utah. {As far as I'm concerned anyways!}

Well, move over Smith's because Winco has arrived! Originally, Smith's was priced 2% lower than Walmart and 3% lower than Target. Winco came in at a whopping 9% lower than Smith's, 11% lower than Walmart and 12% lower than Target!

The downside to all of this is that there are currently only two Winco stores operating in Utah, one in Midvale, the other in West Valley. Two more stores are set to open this year though! The Roy location will be opening this Spring and the Provo location will follow this Fall.  Despite the drive, I feel the savings are worth it, so head over and check it out!

I am from California and have been shopping at Winco for almost 5 years now. In fact, I've always had to drive 30-45 minutes to get there but it is always worth it. Even since I've been couponing, it's still worth it because there are some things that I consistently buy there that I can't find on sale, at least not often enough. I plan my menus a month in advance, then do a huge Winco trip to buy every thing that I need for the following month (except things like produce that won't last as long). I am a huge fan! It's also nice that it's employee owned.

My mom was saying something about there being Winco coupons that come in the mail, but that only certain areas get the coupons. Do you know another way to get these?

I fell in love with Winco also. Luckily for me it is right by the Wal-Mart I shop at so I can hit both stores for the best bargains. I have always thought Wal-Mart's meat has been ridiculously high priced (yeah for ad matching!). I think Winco's meat is very reasonably priced.

Alisha- unfortunately, the only way to get these Winco store coupons is to leave within a certain mile radius to a Winco store. I wish they allowed us to sign up to receive them as well!

Growing up in OR, we had a Winco down the street and I have fond memories as a kid buying items in the bulk section.

I went to Winco during their Grand Opening to score some of the $.98 a pound chicken and I have to say I was HIGHLY disappointed. The chicken went bad in the fridge BEFORE the experation date. It turned white. I had never seen that before. Have you had any problems with their meat? (No, I did not freeze it right away but it was bad in 3 or 4 days.)

Suzyk- I actually haven't ever bought their meat- save the bag of frozen chicken breasts I just got. The meat looks weird. I don't know why! I don't know if it just isn't as fresh as other store's or what, but it looks odd.

I LOVE THE BULK SECTION!I have spent so much time there that my husband and I have become friendly with the manager there. She told us that WINCO has agreements with all of their vendors. If they find a price lower somewhere else, WINCO will go there. Price is their 1st concern, quality a close 2nd. They are a lot like Costco in their ordering. Therefore, it IS inconsistent.
The only meat I've ever gotten there was ground turkey and it was great. Once I was there on a Thursday afternoon. They had Honesuckle White Gr Turkey for 40 cents each! I bought 35 of them. We didn't buy gr turkey for a LONG time! I've never seen a markdown like that since. But it was nice.
Side note: If you want to order for your food storage, call 3 days ahead and they'll order your bags, of rice, wheat, beans, etc. and have it waiting for you. They can't/won't give prices over the phone. So you have to go in and do your price checking. The price on the right hand side of the tag is the bag/box price.
We've ordered a lot of wheat and rice and have never been disappointed. BTW, their long brown rice is THE best rice I've ever had. I may have just jinxed myself. They'll probably find a new vendor!

When we moved back to Idaho as a newly married couple, I made shopping at Winco a regular thing. It's about a 30-40 min. drive from my home, but so worth it! I only go every 2 weeks or so, but I have loved shopping there! Between Winco and CostCo, I get some great prices on my grocery shopping!

I remember shopping at Win-co in Pocatello ID with my mom about 10 years ago and when I got married there was no Win-co in Utah. I was happy to hear they'd arrived here a few months ago, but I live in Utah county, so it still wasn't close enough for me. Thanks for posting at the end that we're going to have some down here soon. That just made my day! Hooray!

I have lived in two states with Winco, Idaho and Oregon. I love Winco and drive the extra 25+ minutes to get to the store. It is well worth the savings. We shop there twice a month and at the local store for all the little things in between our big Winco trip. We save so much money! I'm so glad Utah is catching on and getting more! Their Produce Rocks and is cheap!

I fell in love with Winco. Love their produce section. Love, Love, Love the bulk foods. And actually, I love the air hand dryers in the bathrooms. Dumb thing to love, I guess, but they are amazing and actually get my hands dry. And I'm lucky, because one of the two Utah Winco stores is 1/2 a mile from where I work, so I don't even have to go out of my way to shop there. Yay!

I also heard another Winco in opening up in North Ogden.

Apparently Winco is an ESOP. So they are employee owned by their retirement corporation. Basically, they are a not-for-profit organization and don't have to pay taxes on anything. That's why their prices are so great all the time. I'm excited they're finally in town!

Just so you know Winco does have a fan page on Facebook. I asked them about the store in Roy and they stated that it will be opening up in June, they haven't picked the opening date yet. This is great for me since it'll be literally done the street and I am suber excited.

Also they wrote on facebook taht " Orem and Ogden will hopefully be ready in about 3 months. We don't have a Layton store on our list for this year but will let everyone now if that changes. Thanks"

Ditto the exact same comment as 'leslie the licorice stick lady', except I live in Roy! :)

I really enjoy Winco too! I definitely shop for my food there but I have found there health and beauty, diapers, etc. (everything but food) are highly priced. So I do Winco and Walmart. I have found it is not too bad to go to both stores. I live about 5 min. or less from both stores!! I LOVE Winco's donuts :)

I really like WinCo except for the fact that they won't take my internet coupons!

The West Valley Winco takes my Internet coupons without any problems.

Well, my month hasn't gone as planned. I had to leave out of town suddenly for a few days and then had unexpected company so between the two I haven't really been sticking to the challenge terribly well but I haven't bought any meat yet and have only bought produce, milk and eggs. That was my main goal was to use up meat out of my freezer that has been in there a while.

Do powdered eggs cost less than fresh eggs? I can get fresh ones for $.99 a dozen.

We buy meat at Winco (in Idaho Falls) sometimes and have never had trouble. We also buy seafood there a lot and haven't had a problem. Ours seems to always have really, truly delicious beef stew meat for a great price, and we buy it often. The bulk spices just really can't be beat--it is truly unbelievable how little they cost.

I have famiy in Idaho that shops Winco. I love to go there when I visit and stock up on the bulk food you talked about, spices esp. I was so excited when I found out they were building some in Utah. I however prefer to stay close to home and don't head out to shop much further that around the corner. Maybe one day they'll get one here in my neck of the woods!

We went to Winco today and had a great time. My husband was even entertained and had to call him mom after and tell her about it. I will be interested to see the upcoming post about the bulk food section and how it compares to buying the items in their seperate packages. Thanks for all your hard work and for helping us all to save some money!

I keep meaning to ask you - I don't know if you do Grocery Smarts or not - but as Winco isn't set up yet on Grocery Smarts - how do you know what's really a good deal & what coupons to use? I think going in "blindly" w/o my normal list of how many to buy & with which coupons I'd go crazy!?? Any thoughts? I'm thinking I'm going to have to start going there now that my Alby's is closing that's closer to me. Thanks!

Have you been to NPS in West SLC? It is so FAB and soooo fun!

So will the Winco in Midvale accept internet coupons? I go to Winco if only for the fact that they sell Tillamook ice cream. It is the best I've ever had! Now I don't have to drive to Oregon to get it!

I used to live in Idaho and loved to shop at Winco. When I moved here, I didn't even know where to shop - when we visited Idaho we always shopped there. I have been so happy they came to Utah! It's my favorite place to shop!

My mom is a huge bakery fan and there is no mention of it as of yet. She was wonerding if there was going to be an instore bakery, what is the slection like and how is there prices?

I don't like winco for three reasons. The meat is very good and is in huge packages. I have to bag my own groceries and pay with a check. I like to use my credit card so I can earn points etc.Other then that they do have some great prices. But when I spend 100 bucks I don't want to spend ten minutes bagging my stuff.Shasta is always 68 cents

Just tried to shop and buy a ton in bulk. They told me to take some back, that I had to save some for other customers. What a bunch of crap! They have a limit on how much I can buy? What the hell is that?! Winco = Sucks!

Winco is one of the great supermarkets on the area, I had a problem trying to find coupons, but now I find a website that has all the coupons from various supermarkets.
