Many case lot sales start tomorrow and each time, I analyze to see what store has the best prices. In the past, it's always been Smith's, however this year, Associated Foods Stores have really stepped it up! I did the comparisons off the Dick's ad, taking the prices of 20 popular case lot items. A few of Macey's prices are a bit less, you can see the preview list here, courtesy of PYP.
The verdict is.....
Smith's is again cheaper! Not only that, but taking into consideration many of the Smith's items are brand name, whereas the AFS items are mostly Western Family, I think Smith's items may be better in quality.
So what are you planning on purchasing during the case lot sales? My $30 food storage allotment is going directly to this sale, as well as a decent chunk of my regular $200/ month grocery budget. I haven't stocked up in a case lot sale for a year and we're completely out of many items!

thanks for doing this! i was going back and forth between the 2 ads trying to sort everything out!
I got a $.50 off any case at Dick's coupon today in my Val-Pak. I got another a few weeks ago. I must say though, I am a bit disappointed with the case lots this time. I thought AFS really hyped it up, and I'm disappointed. Do you think the Fall Case Lots are usually better? I find that's when I end up stocking up more.
Claire- I agree! Dick's AFS has been advertising about Case Lot Cash for a while now. Thehir prices are more competitive this time around, but overall, Smith's is still a better deal!
Factoring in Macey's prices, it then works out to be a tie between Smith's and Macey's...and I'd rather go for brand named items at Smith's!
Plus at Smiths you earn the quarterly rewards for purchasing!
Jessica - for those of us who have never used coupons in conjunction with a caselot sale, would you explain how that whole process works? Can you still use coupons if you are buying a whole case of a specific item? Thanks!
I only have 6 cans of cream of chicken soup and like 10 cans of tuna fish left so those are both on my list - this case lot sale couldn't come fast enough for me. I'll proably do both, flour and sugar at Macey's and the others at Smiths.
I second the thank you for doing this. I have always just gone to Maceys, assuming that their prices were better. I had a question about whether the comparison was for brand names or generic. You answered that too. We are low on some staples, so I think I will try Smith's this year. I usually stock up on cooking soups, tomato sauce, ramen noodles, peanut butter, mushrooms, and olives. Weird bunch of things, but it's what we use a lot of.
The only down side to smiths is you have to buy the entire case whereas Macey's lets you buy half, or just a few at the same price. I'm scrambling to figure out how to use all my corn muffin mix from Smiths from their last sale before it expires!
Chelsea- I'm having the same problem....are there other things you can do with corn muffin mix than just muffins and bread?
What about Harmon's? Does it compare?
Could I ask a question about your monthly budget? When you say you have a $200/month grocery budget is that just food or does that include your toiletries, baby items, beauty items? TIA :)
(the corn muffin mix will be fine for quite awhile past it's expiration date, if you can't get it used up fast enough- I wouldn't keep it for years over or anything, but it should be awhile before the flavor changes)
I chose Macey's this time because most of the things I needed were cheaper there. Also there were a few things I didn't want an entire case of. At my Macey's they were substituting name brands because they were out of the Western Family. Love your site by the way!! Thanks for all your hard work...I'm getting hooked on couponing!
I'm wondering about using coupons with the caselot sale at Smiths's too... anyone know?
Smith's is the way to go when you factor in name brand stuff, quarterly rewards, and you earn the rewards for the gas discount!!!!! I'm headed to Smith's.
I was wondering if the morning moo's home storage items were a good buy at $5.98 for their #10 cans at Maceys? Or could I get them at a better price somewhere else?
What about Harmon's. They're also having a case lot sale. Do their prices compare?
Anyone know a good place to get bulk rice?
Maceys is really beating Smiths on the veggies and soups this year, though. I will be going to both.
Does anyone know if when the ad says "limit two" on the vegetables, does that mean two cases of each kind of vegetable or two cases of total vegetables?
