Can I just tell you how awesome it is to have wonderful friends? It is! Even better, many of my wonderful friends have over zealous fruit trees and are willing to share. Score! I think they've realized by now, the way to my heart is through my freezer or pantry. Some friends give gifts of chocolate or a good book- I'll take a big box of apples, thankyouverymuch!
Now...what to do with these apples. Normally I have a plan all mapped out. This year? I'm drawing a blank. I've had the apples now for a few days now and well, they're still in the box.
You can see what I've done with a bunch of apples in the past. I want to do something different. I'm thinking...
Apple Cinnamon Scones
or
Apple Fritters
or
Apple Snicker Doodle Cobbler
or
Crumb Topped Apple Pie
Maybe all 4? Then run a half-marathon to burn off all the calories?? Let me know if you have any healthier ideas~ I'd love to hear them!

Canned Applesauce - plain, nothing added but water and some lemon juice to keep color.
Peel/chop apples and put in large pot. Add water and some lemon juice and cook until tender. Use an immersion blender to pulverize (adding water if needed to make the right applesaucey consistency.) Put in jars and seal up with canner (I used a water bath.) Awesomely good.
These are Golden Delicious apples- so they have a very mild flavor. Will they still make good applesauce? I heard you're supposed to have a few different kinds of apples to make good sauce. Maybe if I make them in the crockpot, I won't have to add water. Thank you for the suggestion- I think I'll try it out and see how it goes!!
I also made an applesauce recipe off of allrecipes.com. I think it was called Sarah's Applesauce. I just made a small batch to test it out and it was a huge hit with the family. Ended up being begged to make it a few more times. I'm hoping we will also be given some apples this year--it's the best! And your other apple recipes sound wonderful!
kids aren't picky. they will taste great!
...Running off to find Sarah's Applesauce...
I have "Sarah's Applesauce" in my recipe binder! My kids think it is the "best" applesauce ever and it is so easy....the directions on the recipe say to do it in a saucepan, but I do it in a crockpot. Just cook on low for 3-4 hours or until it's the consistency you want...makes the house smell delicious with the apples/cinnamon...yum!
We have tons of apples at our house too :) I found this recipe http://allrecipes.com/recipe/apple-strudel-muffins/detail.aspx for Apple Muffins. They were really good. Reviews did suggest doubling the apples (do 1/2 shredded, 1/2 chopped) make the sugar 1/2 white and 1/2 brown, and add 1 tsp or so of cinnamon. They are so good!!
Oh! If you double the apples in the muffin recipe, you'll have a little more than a muffin tin can handle, a couple small pyrex bowls helped me out with that!
Golden delicious make the BEST aplsauce...it's what I look for.
if you dehydrate them they will last you all year long (well that is if you don't at them all right away) I like to dip mine in cherry juice (to help retain a nice color) and then dry them with a touch of cinnamon.
We made these pancakes with apple topping tonight and they were wonderful! I also did a batch of crockpot applesauce today too--yum!
