10 Ways to Save BIG at Target!

Guest Post from my couponing friend, Kelly, in beautiful Southern Utah! Thanks Kelly!

Thank you Alison for having me guest post today at Utah Deal Diva!

I'm Kelly from Utah Dixie Deals where I celebrate the best of St. George and Utah's Dixie!  I love living in Southern Utah and sharing my favorite things to do in our fun corner of the state.  I have been couponing for the last 2 years, and it has forever changed the way I provide for my family.  I love bringing home items that my family uses every day for pennies on the dollar, and know that I can take care of my family without breaking the bank.  Like Alison, I teach coupon classes in Southern Utah and showing others how to save big is one of my favorite things to do.

Like most couponers, I love to find a good deal, pair it with a coupon and then add a little extra discount on the top to make the deal as good as I can.  I thought it would fun to share with Utah Deal Diva readers my favorite ways to save money when shopping at Target. Target doesn’t have the reputation of low prices like their competitors to, but if you are saavy with coupons and know the inside info on how Target works, you can score some big deals!

Below is a list of my 10 favorite ways to save money when shopping at Target:

1. Target coupons - Target releases both store coupons and manufacturer coupons on their website. They have coupons for food items, baby items, even clothing and shoes. Target allows you to stack coupons, which means you can use one manufacturer coupon with one Target store coupon on the same item to save big! Target releases new coupons frequently on their website, so you will want to check it often to see what is new. You can also find Target store coupons occasionally in the Sunday newspaper coupon inserts. However, Target coupons in the newspaper are regional and not everyone will get one, depending on where you live. Make sure you understand Target’s coupon policy before using coupons in the store.

2. Sign up for mobile coupons!  Mobile coupons are Target store coupons sent to your smart phone. You can sign up at this link or text COUPON to 327438 (TARGET). If you need baby items, you can also text BABY to 327438 and get additional baby related coupons. These coupons can also be stacked with manufacturer coupons for big savings. When coupons are released, you will receive a text alert on your phone with a link to the coupons. There is one barcode for several coupons given. At checkout, hold up your phone to the cashier to scan and the coupon amount will be deducted from items purchased.   Target will also send you a text message as a reminder when the coupons are about to expire. Target mobile coupons are one of my favorite ways to save at Target!

3. Cartwheel savings – Target offers two great apps to download on your smartphone – the Target app and the Cartwheel app. The Target app will keep you informed on what sales are going on. The Cartwheel app will give you a percentage off certain items in grocery, clothing and shoes, and just about every section in the store. Check the Cartwheel app every time you shop at Target to see if items you are buying are listed on Cartwheel. If they are, you simply add them to your cart and then show your barcode to the cashier at register (Target likes you to use all paper coupons and mobile coupons before scanning the Cartwheel app). The best thing about the Cartwheel savings is that they are not considered by Target to be a coupon – so you can use it in addition to all other coupons! Don’t have a smartphone app? You can still view Cartwheel savings at Target’s website and print out your barcode before leaving home.  I am constantly surprised about how many people don’t know about the Cartwheel app!  It’s one of the EASIEST ways to save on items you buy all the time.

4. Gift card deals - Target offers gift card deals where you will receive a Target gift card at checkout when you purchase a specific item or a combination of items. Gift cards cannot be used in the same transaction that you purchased them, however, you can split your transactions and they can be used on the second transaction. If you do more than one gift card deal in a transaction, you will receive multiple gift cards! Usually gift card deals are advertised in the weekly Target ad and only available during the week of the ad, however some are unadvertised and last for several weeks at a time.
Below is an example of how I worked a Target gift card deal:
  • Purchased 3 Mio drink enhancers $3.84 each = $11.52
  • Used $1/2 Mio Target store coupon = $10.52
  • Used 3 $1/1 Mio manufacturer coupons = $7.52
  • Received $5 gift card from Target for purchasing 3 products = Final price $2.52 for 3 items {less than the cost of 1 of these products at regular price!}
5. Look for clearance items – Get to know the layout of your local Target store and where clearance items are located.  Check back end caps in each section to find what’s on clearance, but also check down aisles as well.  Each Target store offers marks down items at different times.  Prices ending in $0.06 and $0.08 will be marked down again as long as there is inventory still in the store, while a $0.04 price is the lowest it will be marked down.  A few months ago I snagged a tablecloth on clearance for around $5.  I used a Target store coupon for $3 off plus a Cartwheel discount to get it for less than $1.50.  Total bargain!

6. Online items – Keep an eye out for items purchased online from Target.com and returned to the store.  They will be marked with a red clearance sticker and say “online item”.  They are usually marked down 70% or more.  I found a pair of girl’s shoes once that were an online item and I got them for less than $3!  If you see an online item and you like it, snatch it up because you likely won’t see more.

7. Target’s Low Price Promise. Target will match ads, even online prices! A lot of attention is given to Walmart for price matching competitor’s ads, but did you know that Target will price match too? As long as a price is advertised in a local competitor’s current ad {or at one of the online sites listed below}, and you are purchasing the same identical item at Target, you can price match at Target. Here is their official Price Match Guarantee:  If you buy a qualifying item at a Target store then find the identical item for less in the following week’s Target weekly ad or within seven days at Target.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com, ToysRUs.com, BabiesRUs.com or in a competitor’s local printed ad, we’ll match the price. Price match may be requested at Guest Services prior to your purchase with proof of current lower price or by bringing in your original Target store receipt and proof of the current lower price. You do need to provide the ad in hand for price matching, and they will not accept competitor’s store coupons. They will accept Target store and manufacturer coupons on items that you price match! View Target’s official price matching policy here.  I like to price match many of my Christmas gift items at Target when I see them for killer prices on Amazon.  I save on shipping charges and if I have a coupon to stack with them I save even more.

8. Target mailers - Pay attention to those mailers you get from Target! They send baby item coupons, back to school item coupons, pharmacy coupons, Christmas season coupons, etc! Again, these are Target store coupons that can be paired with a manufacturer’s coupon on the same item. Also, watch out for toy clearance sales up to 70% off in January and July {hit those sales the day they start to get the best selection}.

9. Shopkick app - Shopkick is a free phone app that provides rewards for shopping at specific stores. Rewards start when you walk into the store, scan certain items, or make a purchase (but no purchase is necessary to start receiving reward points called “kicks.”) You can receive Target coupons through Shopkick. View Shopkick information here.

10.  Target REDcard - An easy way to save at Target without using any coupons is to use the Target REDcard. You have three REDcard options: a debit card that deducts from your personal checking account, a Target credit card or a Target VISA credit card. The Target VISA credit card can be used wherever credit cards are accepted, whereas Target credit cards are only used at Target and at Target.com. Whenever you use your REDcard in the store or on Target.com, you save 5% off your total purchases, just like that - voila! Other benefits to the Target REDcard are free shipping on Target.com orders, pharmacy rewards to save up to 10% on a Target shopping trip, and Take Charge of Education reward where you can designate your child’s school to receive up to 1% of your REDcard purchases. If you opt for the Target credit card, you can make your purchases with your REDcard, then pay off the balance at the Guest Service desk.  You can sign up for a REDcard online or at any checkout register at your local Target.

That’s it - 10 easy ways to save while shopping at Target! I hope you learned something new and you save big the next time you shop at Target!
